Gundam refers to a franchise of giant robot mecha anime created by Sunrise. It started with "Mobile Suit Gundam" in 1979 and has since expanded into numerous series, movies, and other media.
Gunpla stands for "Gundam Plastic Model." They are model kits that fans can assemble to create detailed replicas of the mechs from the Gundam series
Most Gunpla kits are "snap-together," meaning glue isn't necessary. The parts are also pre-coloured, so painting is optional, though many hobbyists paint to customize or add details.
For anime, "Mobile Suit Gundam" or "Gundam 00" are great starting points. For Gunpla, begin with HG (High Grade) kits, as they are beginner-friendly with fewer parts and simpler construction.
These abbreviations represent different build grades of each kit:-
HG (High Grade), 1/144 scale, simpler and smaller kits.
MG (Master Grade), 1/100 scale, more detailed with inner frames.
RG (Real Grade), 1/144 scale, combines the size of HG with the detail of MG.
PG (Perfect Grade), 1/60 scale, the most detailed and largest standard kits.
