How Tall are Gundam Models When Assembled?

Gundam model kits come in different grades and scales. The height of a Gundam model kit (Gunpla) when built depends on its scale. For example, a 1/144 scale model would be 144 times smaller than the actual Gundam it represents. Check out this great image comparing the classic mobile suit Gundam RX-78-2 below.

Entry Grade Gunpla are similar to First Grade (FG) and No Grade 1/144 gunpla kits.

This is a new grade of Gundam not featured in the above image. Entry Grade Gundam (1/144 scale) still stands approximately 125mm tall.

RE/100 Reborn One Hundred or Full Mechanics Gundam are equivalent in size to MG Gundam..

Super Deformed (SD) Gundam have no scale and stand up to 80mm tall. The release of SD Gundam Cross Silhouette (SDCS) increases the build height in cross silhouette form to 95mm.

There are variations in height within all the Grades.

There will be differences in height and overall size within each of the Gunpla grades. The final size of any Gunpla is determined by how large it was when it appeared in the anime series. For Example, HGUC Nightingale, HGUC Penelope, HGUC Xi Gundam or HGUC Baund Doc are so much larger than most of the other Gunpla featured from the Universal Century timeline.

Comparing price within each grade can also help a potential buyer to gage the overall size and complexity a Gunpla may be. IE. Higher price = bigger completed size & a greater number of pieces included.

Now let’s look at completed heights of some of the more popular Gunpla building grades. There are also kits which contain additional add on parts such as boosters or dragoons but they generally make the kits wider. Examples include, Psycho Zaku Gundam Thunderbolt versions, Deep Striker or Strike Freedom Gundam Full Burst Mode.

Tallest Gundam Ever Built

There are currently 4 life size Gundam replicas built in the world. 3 are in Japan and 1 in China.

The RX-93 Nu Gundam is expected to be the tallest Gundam model ever built standing around 24.8 metres tall in Fukuoka, Japan. It easily towers over Tokyo’s RX-0 Unicorn Gundam (19.7m – Unicorn Mode & 21.7m – Destroy Mode), Yokohama’s RX-78-2 Gundam (18m) and Shanghai’s ZGMF-X10A Freedom Gundam (18m).

Prior to these, Bandai has erected 1/1 scale Gundam in many different locations throughout Japan since 2009. These were all different versions of the classic RX-78-2 Gundam.
