Key features

1. Brute Force in Form: The Tristan is a heavily armored beast, reimagining the classic Gundam with a rugged, aggressive upgrade. Thick, angular plates cover its body, offering both imposing visuals and enhanced defense in the lore. This translates into the model kit, with chunky armor pieces that snap together to form a truly intimidating presence.

2. Weaponry Galore: While retaining the iconic beam rifle and shield, the Tristan packs a punch with additional firepower. Hidden beneath its forearms lie Alex-style gatling guns, ready to unleash a hail of bullets. This weapon variety adds playability and visual interest, letting you pose the Tristan in dynamic combat scenarios.

3. Articulation and Detail: Despite its bulk, the Tristan boasts surprising flexibility. Polycap joints at key points allow you to recreate dynamic poses from the source material. Pre-colored plastic provides a base, while included stickers add intricate details and markings, letting you achieve a truly accurate representation of this unique Gundam.

Assembly Guide

Skill Level.2 Basic modeling skills are required. Parental supervision may be required for younger children. These kits are generally suitable for beginner builders. A basic set of modeling tools are required including nippers, hobby knife, sanding sticks/paper, file, and tweezers. No glue is needed for the general assembly. Parts will need to be removed by using a pair of nippers and cutting the part away from the runner. Parts may require clean-up where they were removed from the runner.

Gunpla (plastic model kits) are a snap together assembly and do not need plastic cement to complete. We always recommend having some plastic cement handy as a part of your modeler's tool kit. If you prefer to fix your model in a particular pose then plastic cement will work. Plastic cement is also perfect to use if a joint is loose. Apply plastic cement in a single thin layer and allow it to dry completely before test fitting. Re-apply more cement if necessary.

Gunpla (plastic model kits) are designed to be built and displayed without the need for painting. Kits are molded in different colours replicating the colours of the actual mecha from the Gundam series. A technique called colour separation, where multiple parts of the model are molded in different colours on the same sprue is also used. Gundam kits often include stickers or water-slide decals that can be applied to the model to enhance its appearance. Some Gunpla kits come with pre-painted parts or parts with pre-applied details, such as metallic or translucent finishes.

Many modelers still choose to paint their kits to customize and add further detail. Painting allows for more creativity and personalization, enabling modelers to achieve unique effects, weathering, and colour schemes that may not be available out of the box. However, the kits are designed to be enjoyable and visually appealing even without painting, making them accessible to a wide range of hobbyists.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between the Tristan and the standard RX-78 Gundam?

The Tristan is a heavily modified version of the classic RX-78 Gundam, sporting a more aggressive and rugged appearance. It features: Bulkier armor: The Tristan's most striking difference is its thick, angular armor plating, providing increased protection and a menacing silhouette. Unique backpack: The backpack is repurposed from a Gundam MK-II, adding additional thrusters and a distinctive look. Weapon variations: While it retains the classic beam rifle and shield, the Tristan also boasts Alex-style gatling guns hidden under its forearms.

How difficult is it to build?

The Tristan falls under the High Grade Universal Century (HGUC) line, known for its moderate difficulty level. It's a good choice for experienced modelers or those comfortable with basic hobby tools and techniques. Snap-fit assembly: The parts come pre-colored and require no gluing, making it a convenient build. Articulation: The joints offer decent posability for dynamic posing, though some reviewers mention slightly fragile shoulder joints. Stickers: The kit includes stickers for additional detailing, but some details are molded in plastic, reducing sticker reliance.

Is it accurate to the source material?

The HGUC Tristan faithfully captures the design from the "Mobile Suit Gundam Twilight Axis" media, including the anime, manga, and light novel. Proportions and details: The kit accurately reflects the Tristan's imposing presence and intricate armor design. Color scheme: While pre-colored plastic provides a base, the included stickers help achieve the exact color scheme from the source material.

What are some potential downsides?

While generally well-received, some aspects of the Tristan kit have received mixed reviews: Shoulder joint fragility: As mentioned earlier, some builders have encountered issues with the shoulder joints breaking easily. Limited gatling gun visibility: The Alex-style gatling guns are hidden under the forearms, making them less visually impactful compared to other Gundam weaponry. Reused Alex mold: Some modelers might find the use of the Alex mold for certain parts less desirable compared to a completely new design.
