Key features
  1. Ultra-Large Mace: The Lupus Rex is equipped with an enormous mace known as the "Ultra-Large Mace," which is even more imposing than the weapons of its predecessors. The sheer size and weight of this weapon enable the Lupus Rex to deliver crushing blows to its adversaries, emphasizing the raw power of this particular Gundam form.
  2. Sub-Arms and Tail Blade: The Gundam Barbatos Lupus Rex boasts enhanced sub-arms housed in its forearms, which can hold and deploy various weapons. Additionally, the mobile suit incorporates a tail blade, reminiscent of a tail of a beast, which provides an added dimension to its combat capabilities. The tail blade can be used both defensively and offensively, making the Lupus Rex an even more versatile combatant.
  3. Ferocious Clawed Feet and Hands: In this iteration, the feet of the Gundam Barbatos have been redesigned to resemble sharp talons, enabling it to grip and crush enemies. The hands are also larger and more claw-like, reflecting the "wild" nature of the "Rex" in its name and allowing the mobile suit to engage in more primal forms of combat.

The Bandai 1/144 HGIBO Gundam Barbatos Lupus Rex captures the essence of the mobile suit's primal rage and raw power. As one of the defining suits in the latter part of the "Iron-Blooded Orphans" series, it represents the culmination of the Gundam Barbatos's evolution, making it a must-have for fans and collectors of the IBO series.

Bandai 1/144 HGIBO Gundam Barbatos Lupus Rex

Straight out of "Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans", the Gundam Barbatos Lupus Rex is the fierce final upgrade of Tekkedan’s iconic Gundam Barbatos. After a fierce battle with the formidable Mobile Armor Hashimal, it underwent significant upgrades at Teiwaz’s Saisei. Sporting a more primal and animalistic design, it perfectly complements Mikazuki's intense combat style. One of its standout features is the integration of the Tail Blade from the defeated Hashimal, making it seem as if the Gundam gained a fifth limb, thanks to the Alaya-Vijnana System.

This mechanical marvel is not just about aesthetics. Its Ultra Large Mace is a game-changer, designed to decimate battleships and Mobile Suits alike, with the capability to extend its reach. Plus, its built-in 200mm cannons make it even deadlier. While primarily a close-quarters combat Mobile Suit, piloted by the skilled Mikazuki Augus and crafted by Teiwaz, its lore and features make it a highlight of the Gundam universe.

Assembly Guide

Skill Level.2 Basic modeling skills are required. Parental supervision may be required for younger children. These kits are generally suitable for beginner builders. A basic set of modeling tools are required including nippers, hobby knife, sanding sticks/paper, file, and tweezers. No glue is needed for the general assembly. Parts will need to be removed by using a pair of nippers and cutting the part away from the runner. Parts may require clean-up where they were removed from the runner.

Gunpla (plastic model kits) are a snap together assembly and do not need plastic cement to complete. We always recommend having some plastic cement handy as a part of your modeler's tool kit. If you prefer to fix your model in a particular pose then plastic cement will work. Plastic cement is also perfect to use if a joint is loose. Apply plastic cement in a single thin layer and allow it to dry completely before test fitting. Re-apply more cement if necessary.

Gunpla (plastic model kits) are designed to be built and displayed without the need for painting. Kits are molded in different colours replicating the colours of the actual mecha from the Gundam series. A technique called colour separation, where multiple parts of the model are molded in different colours on the same sprue is also used. Gundam kits often include stickers or water-slide decals that can be applied to the model to enhance its appearance. Some Gunpla kits come with pre-painted parts or parts with pre-applied details, such as metallic or translucent finishes.

Many modelers still choose to paint their kits to customize and add further detail. Painting allows for more creativity and personalization, enabling modelers to achieve unique effects, weathering, and colour schemes that may not be available out of the box. However, the kits are designed to be enjoyable and visually appealing even without painting, making them accessible to a wide range of hobbyists.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the Iron-Blooded Orphans HG series differ from other High Grade Gunpla series?

The Iron-Blooded Orphans (IBO) HG series is tailored to reflect the unique mobile suit designs and aesthetics of the "Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans" anime. The kits often feature inner mechanical details known as the "frame system," which gives the models a greater range of articulation and poseability compared to some other HG series

I'm particularly interested in the Barbatos mobile suit. Is there a model for that in the HG IBO series?

Absolutely! The Barbatos is one of the standout mobile suits from the IBO series, and there are multiple iterations of the HG Barbatos available, reflecting its various forms and upgrades throughout the anime. Given the distinct design of IBO mobile suits, are these HG kits more complicated to build than other High Grades?

While the IBO HG series showcases unique designs and the frame system, the complexity is still in line with other High Grade kits. They are designed to be accessible, especially for those familiar with HG builds. However, the frame system does add an enjoyable layer of depth for builders who appreciate inner details. Comments: This kit uses stickers for several parts that could quite easily have been molded plastic instead to its detriment, and while the practice of touching up box art models is understandable, in this case the art and product vary enough that it borders on deceptive advertising.

Likes: Everything that isn't listed as a flaw was of satisfactory standard for a HG.
Improvements: More accurate/less deceptive box art in regard to the claws. Less use of stickers for parts that could have easily been molded plastic instead.
Not reccomended for those without skill in painting their kits

This kit unfortunately may be the least satisfying HG I've assembled out of the 6 I've done so far. Issues include the toes and tail being stickers that are quite awkward to fit to the shape, and, contrary to the box art and display images above, the fingers and hands are a single piece, and entirely solid grey without the yellow claws it is shown with. I suspect these were compromises made to allow it and other Barbatos kits to use the same molds. For someone with a basic level of skill in painting kits, these are non-issues and it could be made to look quite good for a HG with relatively little effort and at an affordable price to boot. However, for a novice or beginner, this kit likely won't give good results with snapfit alone.
The foot design, spindly midsection, and weapons (Tail+Mace) also make it quite difficult to pose in a stable way without a base. This is really a result of the gundam's design and not a flaw in the kit itself, but something prospective buyers should be aware of nonetheless.
