Bandai 1/48 HG Artillery Battle Frame Aestivalis

It's been a decade since "Martian Successor Nadesico" made its resounding splash on the anime scene--and the ripples are still being felt today! Now Bandai gives fans who missed out the first time a great chance to make up for lost time, by reissuing its 1997 Artillery Battle Frame Aestivalis High Grade snap-fit kit. Parts come molded in color, and the mecha will feature polycap-jointed articulation upon completion. Anchors extend out the back of the legs, artillery-style, to brace the machine when firing its big 120mm cannon. The Assault Pit (and any other Assault Pits from other Battle Frame Aestivalis HG kits) can be attached to the Battle Frame. A sheet of foil stickers is provided

Assembly Guide

Skill Level.2 Basic modeling skills are required. Parental supervision may be required for younger children. These kits are generally suitable for beginner builders. A basic set of modeling tools are required including nippers, hobby knife, sanding sticks/paper, file, and tweezers. No glue is needed for the general assembly. Parts will need to be removed by using a pair of nippers and cutting the part away from the runner. Parts may require clean-up where they were removed from the runner.

Gunpla (plastic model kits) are a snap together assembly and do not need plastic cement to complete. We always recommend having some plastic cement handy as a part of your modeler's tool kit. If you prefer to fix your model in a particular pose then plastic cement will work. Plastic cement is also perfect to use if a joint is loose. Apply plastic cement in a single thin layer and allow it to dry completely before test fitting. Re-apply more cement if necessary.

Gunpla (plastic model kits) are designed to be built and displayed without the need for painting. Kits are molded in different colours replicating the colours of the actual mecha from the Gundam series. A technique called colour separation, where multiple parts of the model are molded in different colours on the same sprue is also used. Gundam kits often include stickers or water-slide decals that can be applied to the model to enhance its appearance. Some Gunpla kits come with pre-painted parts or parts with pre-applied details, such as metallic or translucent finishes.

Many modelers still choose to paint their kits to customize and add further detail. Painting allows for more creativity and personalization, enabling modelers to achieve unique effects, weathering, and colour schemes that may not be available out of the box. However, the kits are designed to be enjoyable and visually appealing even without painting, making them accessible to a wide range of hobbyists.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does this differ from the "Aerial" Aestivalis kit?

This Artillery version focuses on the Aestivalis' heavy firepower! While the Aerial kit excels in dynamic poses and flight maneuvers, this one emphasizes its long-range artillery capabilities and grounded stance. Expect different weapons and a more imposing presence.

What kind of weapons are included?

Get ready for heavy metal! The kit features: 120mm High-Caliber Cannon: The star of the show, this behemoth cannon dominates the Aestivalis' silhouette. Pose it on the included firing legs for a truly intimidating display. Beam Saber & Shield: For close-quarters encounters, the Aestivalis packs a punch with its iconic beam saber and a sturdy shield. Optional Hand Parts: Allow you to hold and pose the weapons dynamically.

Does it have the same articulation as the Aerial version?

While still offering decent posability, the Artillery Aestivalis focuses on a stable stance for firing its heavy cannon. The arms and legs have enough movement for varied displays, but the focus is on capturing its firepower rather than aerial acrobatics.

Is it pre-painted, or do I need to paint it myself?

Similar to other HG kits, it comes in pre-colored plastic with some parts molded in different colors for easier assembly. However, for the full anime aesthetics and personalized touches, paintwork is recommended. This lets you add weathering effects and create your own unique Aestivalis, but requires additional materials and some painting skills.

Is it difficult to build compared to the Aerial kit?

The Artillery Aestivalis is rated as the same "Intermediate" level as the Aerial version. Both are snap-fit and glue-less, but the larger cannon and different build focus might make it seem slightly more complex to some builders. Patience and attention to detail are key for both kits.
