Series Assembly Guide FAQ

Bandai PG 1/60 Evangelion Eva-01 Test Type

This is the ultimate EVA kit. The completed item stands 34.5cm high, bigger than nearly every other EVA kit that has been released. The basic structure is completely different from the existing LM-HG kits. An inner, posable skeleton of heavy-duty, semi-hard plastic is covered by soft, black, rubber covers that conceal the inner frame at the "gaps" in the EVA's armor at joints, on the abdomen and other places. This rubber suit is then covered in turn by the usual outer plastic panels. This structure, the designers say, give it a durability and poseability well beyond what you are used to seeing in Bandai HG and MG kits. Also, in addition to doing all the things that the LM-HG kits do, this kit's shoulder panels open (both sides) for weapon storage, and a plug-in power pack (takes 2 AAA batteries) lights up the EVA logos on its shoulders. Five sets of hands are included, as are the Pallet Gun, Progressive Knife, Two swords (long & short) with scabbards, the inner Eva head and a red metallic-plated "core."

Assembly Guide

Skill Level.3. Basic modeling skills are essential. These kits are not recommended for beginners or children due to the high level of complexity of assembly and the sheer volume of parts. Experience in building more complex Gunpla models is recommended. Parental supervision is essential. A full set of hobby tools is recommended that includes, nippers, hobby knives, sandpaper, sanding sticks, files, buffing files, glues, tweezers, and decal adhesive/softener. Parts will need to be removed by using a pair of nippers and cutting the part away from the runner. Parts may require clean-up where they were removed from the runner.

Gunpla (plastic model kits) are a snap together assembly and do not need plastic cement to complete. We always recommend having some plastic cement handy as a part of your modeler's tool kit. If you prefer to fix your model in a particular pose then plastic cement will work. Plastic cement is also perfect to use if a joint is loose. Apply plastic cement in a single thin layer and allow it to dry completely before test fitting. Re-apply more cement if necessary.

Gunpla (plastic model kits) are designed to be built and displayed without the need for painting. Kits are molded in different colours replicating the colours of the actual mecha from the Gundam series. A technique called colour separation, where multiple parts of the model are molded in different colours on the same sprue is also used. Gundam kits often include stickers or water-slide decals that can be applied to the model to enhance its appearance. Some Gunpla kits come with pre-painted parts or parts with pre-applied details, such as metallic or translucent finishes.

Many modelers still choose to paint their kits to customize and add further detail. Painting allows for more creativity and personalization, enabling modelers to achieve unique effects, weathering, and colour schemes that may not be available out of the box. However, the kits are designed to be enjoyable and visually appealing even without painting, making them accessible to a wide range of hobbyists.

Frequently Asked Questions

How big is the finished figure? Is it worth the shelf space?

This is a monster of a model! Standing at a towering 34.5cm (13.6 inches), it demands significant shelf space. But its imposing size reflects the Eva's power and intricacy, making it a true centerpiece for any Evangelion fan's collection.

Is it pre-painted or do I need to paint it myself?

The Test Type comes pre-painted in its iconic purple and green color scheme, with detailed weathering and shading. This saves you time and effort, but experienced modelers can still add their own personalized touches with custom weathering or panel lining.

How complex is the build? Is it for beginners?

This is a highly detailed model kit for experienced builders. The snap-fit construction simplifies assembly compared to glue-based kits, but the sheer number of parts, intricate details, and internal skeleton require patience, dexterity, and some experience. If you're a beginner, start with simpler Eva kits before tackling this beast.

What special features does it have?

The Test Type boasts incredible features, including: Interchangeable arm armor: Switch between the regular arms and the massive "Magrox" arms for different poses and display options. Internal skeleton: See the Eva's inner workings through the translucent armor, adding realism and depth to the model. LED compatibility (sold separately): Light up the Eva's eyes and chest for a truly electrifying display.

Where can I find it and how much does it cost?

This kit is available at various online retailers specializing in anime merchandise and hobby supplies, like Amazon, HobbyLink Japan, and BigBadToyStore. The price can vary depending on availability and retailer, but generally falls within the $200-$300 USD range.
